Partnerships make a difference

Four years ago 191 nations and 147 heads of state and government adopted the Millennium Declaration, an eight-point program calling for assistance to children orphaned by HIV/AIDS, halting infection rates and prevention. Other points include the alleviation and eradication of poverty and hunger, promoting gender equality and universal primary education, reducing child mortality and improving maternal health, fostering environmental sustainability and the need to develop global partnerships for action to address these goals more effectively.

One World Beat is but one example: It has many nonprofit affiliates, musicians, artists, volunteers, journalists, advertising/PR professionals, the support of UNESCO in Switzerland, First Voices International and Massive Effort. Other great examples of partnerships and coalition-building in action are Keep A Child Alive, Artists for a New South Africa, Artists Against AIDS Worldwide (AAAW), AfricaAlive!, ActALIVE, Red Hot, Nextaid, Art4Development, MTV/One World International, with its "Staying Alive campaign" (a partnership between MTV, Family Health International, the Kaiser Foundation, UNAIDS and the World Bank).

A mix of organizations and individuals are joining hands to address HIV/AIDS—those in the arts, science/technology, in business and faith-based endeavors, NGOs and CBOs, international organizations and private foundations, government and academia, various age groups and genders, people from all walks of life and circumstances, those directly affected by or living with HIV/AIDS and those who are not.

Throughout this year's One World Beat Festival we will highlight these amazing and invaluable endeavors, organizations, individuals and communities worldwide working to prevent, educate about, help those already dealing with illness and eradicate HIV/AIDS—especially through music, art and the richness of cultural expression.

Information, Education, Communication (IEC): these are the components of successful behavioral change, and music is qualified like few other means to inform, educate, communicate and inspire! Please join us, adding your unique voice to this creative and compassionate chorus, helping us to ensure that music can make a big difference. We look forward to beating HIV/AIDS as one! Thank you.
