On
Saturday, March 19th, from 11pm-12am,
a "Drumming in One World Beat"
event will take place at the Hoog
Catharijne, Utrecht Central Station,
in Utrecht, Netherlands. Between 15-30
drummers, most affiliated with UNOY--United
Network of Young Peacebuilders--a
Dutch-based, international youth peace
organization, will participate. They
are also inviting anyone with a percussion
instrument to come join in the drumming.
There will be skilled drummers from
different parts of the world taking
turns in setting their beat. They
will also be handing out inspirational
peace candles, as well as flyers and
postcards about "peacebuilding".
Photos and a report about the event
will then be posted on the UNOY website
(www.unoy.org
).
Drummers will meet at 10:45pm at Utrecht
Central Station, and go from there
to the Hoog Catharijne, which is right
next door. The centrality of the location
should make the event highly visible,
and will hopefully attract a number
of participants. For more about this
event, see the UNOY website, or contact
organizers Charlotte Meyer at c_meyer_usa@hotmail.com
, OWB Africa Coordinator (based in
Amsterdam) Patrick Effiboley at peffiboley@yahoo.fr
, or Bodil Dronkers at b.l.dronkers@students.uu.nl
.
UNOY is a global network of young
people and youth organizations active
in the field of peace-building, working
mostly in conflict and post-conflict
regions. Established in 1989, it has
organized a number of international
working-group meetings, training seminars,
and global and regional conferences.
Its main focus until recently has
been in Eastern Europe and Africa,
where participants at UNOY events
have gone on to create effective local
and regional organizations, peace-building
projects, and capacity-building for
local youth. It now intends to expand
its work around the globe.
One of UNOY's projects, the "Peace
It Together" Campaign for a Culture
of Peace and Non-Violence, is working
within the framework of the International
Decade for a Culture of Peace and
Non-Violence for the Children of the
World (2001-2010). They are also developing
and carrying out projects through
the African Network of Young Peacebuilders,
and other continental networks. UNOY
has members in Bolivia, Argentina,
Morocco, South Africa, Malawi, Sierra
Leone, Eritrea, Nepal, India, Russia,
Caucacus, Ukraine, and worldwide.
Singing and dancing for peace are
important aspects of their work, and
this drumming event will amply demonstrate
their commitment to making a difference,
through music and peace-building alike.
