On March 20th,
starting at 9pm at Lock 17--a restaurant-club
in London featuring live music and
four separate bars--the Matt Schofield
Trio will play in a concert presented
by Live Music Management and the GigRig
Company. This band, with its amazing
fusion of blues and funk, is fronted
by Schofield, described as the "finest
blues-inspired guitarist to have emerged
in the UK in several generations.
He is now on a tour to celebrate the
release of his new album.
Many fans in the UK and Europe will
already know Matt from his work with
Lee Sankey, Dana Gillespie (of the
London Blues Band), and the Lester
Butler Tribute Band. His debut CD--"The
Trio, Live"--with organist Jonny
Henderson and drummer Evan Jenkins,
"is a melting pot of energetic
swinging blues and powerful funk that
draws inspiration from the classic
American jazz organ trios of the 1950's
and 1960's, and mixes this with guitar-led
blues and funky instrumental workouts",
with nods to the likes of BB King,
Muddy Waters, Albert Collins, and
Eric Clapton. Matt can also be heard
on numerous recordings by other artists,
as well as in compilations.
Born in Manchester, Matt started playing
guitar seriously at 12, ventured to
London at 18--where he started performing
regularly--and has since toured the
world and appeared at numerous festivals.
He will be headlining at the Jazz
Cafe in London on April 20th, and
for Christmas 2004 organized a charity
event with Nordoff Robbins--a music
therapy center in London with which
he has strong ties--which was BBC-supported
(www.nordoff-robbins.org.uk).
The event, in which musicians remembered
their first instruments and foray
into music, is part of a campaign
to urge parents to provide instruments
for their children, and to help sick
or disabled children and adults discover
the therapeutic powers of music through
playing and improvisation.
Matt and his bandmates are a great
role model for those looking to make
a difference with their music, and
we are honored that they are giving
of their time, talents, and immense
caring to help OWB "Give A Child
A Chance".
