On
January 26th, at the Porter Cellar
Bar in Bath, UK, Counterglow was countering
the destructive aftermath of December's
Asian tsunami with one of the first
"Beat The Wave" concerts
- and it was a great success. The
band donated their proceeds and when
Matt Smith announced the purpose and
cause of their gig, the audience spontaniously
made additional contributions - a
fine act of solidarity in the spirit
of One World Beat!
Counterglow's
material is drawn from rock genres
of the 1960's to the 1990's, and they
play as both a duo and four-piece
band, in gigs ranging from folks clubs
and student gatherings to BBC radio,
bars, and larger concert halls.
Guitarists
Matt Smith and Jon Penny formed the
band in 2002--while at university
in Nottingham, UK--and have since
added a drummer and bassist. Their
new album, "Shout in Vain",
will be available shortly, and tracks
from their previous EP, "Blind
Roads" (2003), can be downloaded
at their website. Musician Magazine
says of the duo: "their distinctive
voices, one a Morriseyesque yawn and
the other an earthy growl, combine
in luminous harmonies".
Their
website is at www.counterglowmusic.com,
and they can be reached through Matt
Smith.
