What's happpening in the UK
  • Fresh Sounds presents "Breakthrough" at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London Shepherds Bush Empire is one of the UK's most prestigious venues, with a crowd capacity of more than 2000. Some of the biggest names in music have performed here, including Elton John, Bob Dylan and Oasis. "Breakthrough" is set to be a real crowd pleaser and should see significant donations for One World Beat. The event and its beneficiaries will be advertised on several local and national radio stations, as well as in newspapers and magazines.
  • South Hill Park Arts Center hosts The Shrine Saturday, March 20, at 8 p.m. in the Cellar Bar. On dock is Rita Ray with London's hottest Afro-Beat club experience, an homage to the late, great Nigerian musician, Fela Kuti. Ray is DJ, musician, World Service presenter and founder of The Shrine. The night promises to be the hottest, steamiest and most racy Afro-Funk this side of Kuti's legendary club, a hotbed of intellectual and artistic activity (or a den of utmost depravity, depending on who you talk to). "We could never carry on with what the original Shrine did, because we would be arrested," says Ray. "But we're trying to stay true to the Fela mentality." Afro-Beat is a combination of hi-life, reggae and rock, as developed in Nigeria by Kuti throughout the 1970's—an experience not to be missed.

  • OWB Volunteer, Linda Serck, posts Festival Events on her BBC site! Linda Serck is a media coordinator for One World Beat and a BBC journalist for Berkshire Online based in Reading, England. Her expertise is music, and she covers live events. She met Mark Roach, OWB's UK Communications Manager, when both were judges at a "Battle of the Bands" competition in south London. Their volunteer efforts have been profiled on the "Hold the Front Page" website, which features national journalism in the UK.
