Elspeth's
studies have nothing to do with what she does now (a degree in literature
at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine and a master's in
criminology at Cambridge University, England). Returning from England,
she went in a completely different direction: Nine years as an advertising
copywriter. In 1999 she left to "follow her heart" to expand and
explore. She has since been an independent multimedia artist.
- Music
Instrumental soundtracks created on her keyboard workstation are "music
for the movie of your mind," she describes, creating an interactive
experience. She asks the audience to close their eyes, eyelids becoming
each person's screen for visuals her music inspires. Strong Eastern
and Celtic vibes with an overall mystical spirit make for a visual,
meditational experience. She composes soundtracks for screen and other
projects: short films, videos, commercials, documentaries and theater
productions. Her third CD, Infinite (2002), marks her debut
as a singer. Musically, it departs from the weaving textures of her
keyboard music, as she accompanies herself with acoustic guitar. She
refers to this form of her music as "acoustic folk mantras" because
of repetition of certain phrases and sitar-like guitar playing. Other
CDs include Moving Pictures (2000) and Manzilla (2001.
- Film/video
Elspeth has two original short films to her credit: Six (1998)
and All of Emily(2002).
- Installation
art Through three-dimensional interactive art Elspeth explores
spiritual and emotional themes, inviting viewers to experience rather
than merely observe. She uses non-traditional media, in particular,
old windows and doors. A specialty is ambient "window lamps" made
from the windows of old houses.
- Photography
Elspeth's newly coined genre for thiswork is fictography (Fict
from fiction and ography from photography). She takes a series
of photographs and fictionalizes them with the story they inspire.
The result is a "still film" on photographic paper. The mood or story
they evoke become bases for music soundtracks.
- Happy
Hippy Productions is Elspeth's multimedia company involving a
network of partners in creative fields doing independent creative
ventures. The aim of every project is to uplift people through creativity.
Example: Last October's All Creatures Great and Small Concert at the
Little Carib Theatre, Woodbrook (Trinidad) benefitting the Animal
Welfare Network (AWN) to support rescue, re-homing and rehabilitating
animals.
